October 30, 1887 – The body of a middle-aged woman was found jammed into a box as the morning train neared the Lacona depot. The box was addressed to J.H. GILLISPIE of Des Moines, a young M.D. recently of Chariton. The doctor was arrested on Tuesday and returned to Chariton.
