    J.E. McCLURG

McClurg Chapel, built by J.E. McCLURG, was dedicated in 1869.  It was designed by architect James DONALSON. In its day it was considered “among the neatest if not most tasty church in the county”. The Church was bought by the Methodists October 1870. In the early 70s it reverted back to McCLURG. The building became a lecture hall, then a dance hall before being moved northwest of Lacona. In 1880 S.H. MALLORY and J.E. McCLURG bought a grain house in Osceola and moved it near the Lacona railroad depot for grinding grain. In 1881 he opened a first-class hotel in Lacona called the CB&Q. It was not very successful and folded in a short time.  (Source - Chronology of the early settlers of White Breast Township and Lacona compiled by Edith HEEMSTRA and John FORD sometime around 1980.)
