George H. ACKORS
In 1902 George ACKORS, a prominent businessman in Lacona and C.F. MILLER formed a partnership in the furniture and undertaking business. Mr. Ackors became a farm laborer at the age of eight and after several years managed to save enough money to purchase 125 acres in Lucas County where he engaged in farming and stock raising for 14 years. In 1902 he sold his farming interests and moved to Lacona, where he and his partner, C.F. MILLER and started the furniture and undertaking business. He earned a diploma and state license for embalming. In 1905 he purchased Mr. Miller's interest in the business. In 1905 he purchased Mr. MILLER's interest in the business and in September 1909 he sold his interest in the business to Ed MOSHER. He was a Republican and was elected mayor of Lacona but he refused to serve. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, a Master Mason in the blue lodge at Liberty Center, I.O.O.F. lodge at Lacona.(Sources - Chronology of the early settlers of White Breast Township and Lacona. Dr. Applegate was a physician and surgeon; born in Trumbull county,Ohio,
in 1830 and was raised there on a farm; emigrated to Iowa in November,
1856,and to this county in 1857, and engaged in farming and teaching school,
and at the same time pursuing his medical studies; he enlisted in the
34th Iowa Infantryand was afterward appointed Acting Assistant Surgeon U.S.A. and served
until the close of the war.
He began practicing medicine in Lacona in 1864 and moved his practice to
Indianola in 1875 He married Miss L.J. Hamilton in 1865; she
was born in Ohio.(Source
