    Rev. Alexander C. TRIS

Lacona was originally named Jefferson. In 1857 the name needed to be changed for mail purposes because there was another Jefferson. Rev. Alexander C. TRIS from Holland had begun plans to establish a colony of Holland United Presbyterians nearby. It was going to be called "Laconia". “Lacona” was suggested as the new name for Jefferson. The name officially took effect September 5, 1857. (Source - Chronology of the early settlers of White Breast Township and Lacona compiled by Edith HEEMSTRA and John FORD sometime around 1980.)
